Round downspouts, with their circular shape, have a wider opening then their rectangular counterpart and will allow more and larger debris to enter the system and pass through.

Round downspouts are perfectly smooth and do not have any corrugations. Corrugated downspouts (round or rectangular) include ridges where items can get stuck, or corrosion can hide.

Copper downspouts provide more than twice the lifespan of aluminum. Copper is also durable while still being lightweight and it provides a much more stylish, unique finish. Many people choose copper for its low maintenance and high style, and the round style is much easier to install.

Plain round copper downspouts are optimally designed for use with half round gutters and built-in gutter systems. However, they are compatible with many K-Style and box gutter systems. The round spout doesn’t have the same capacity with the K-Style fit, but it is an option for those who want it. It’s best to stick with the downspouts recommended for the type of gutters that you have.

All copper oxidizes once it is exposed to air for an extended period. This will turn the shiny copper into a greenish shade, thanks to the patina that develops. However, oxidation is not damaged and does not cause damage, so it’s not really something that you need to worry about.

Gutter leader heads are not necessary for all gutters. Some people choose to install them for aesthetic appeal, while others choose them for their capability to handle heavier rainfalls. If you live in an area prone to heavy rainfall or are collecting rainwater, leader heads may be a good solution.

Typically they cost between $25-$40 per linear ft. installed.

There are pros and cons to soldering copper downspouts.  Downspouts often become clogged when they are soldered and would be more difficult to take apart when needed.  Copper rivets are commonly used to attach the downspouts to the elbows and the elbows to the gutter outlet.  These can be drilled out and refastened if the downspouts need to be taken apart.

There are a number of different ways to attach the downspouts to the structure and the correct one will depend on whether you are attaching to brick/stone, stucco or a type of siding.
